Sharpening

I recommend use of a Norton IB8 aluminium oxide oilstone for sharpening my knives. The tan (fine) side of this stone, used in conjunction with a light oil (e.g CRC 5-56 or kerosene) will generally get the edge close to shaving sharp. Final finishing on an extra fine natural stone (e.g. a hard Arkansas stone) or a flat ceramic stone will produce a razor sharp edge.

Knives may be touched up in the field using a fine or extra-fine diamond hone, ceramic stick or sharpening steel. Of the three methods, my best results have been obtained using a fine (red) DMT diamond hone.

A useful guide to the technique of sharpening may be found at http://www.i4at.org/lib2.knife/htm
