New Linisher

I am starting to build a new linisher using a 10" / 250 mm contact wheel running 2375 mm x 50 mm (108" x 2") belts. Photos will be added as the work progresses.

I generally design and build my linishers at the same time, taking into account the parts I already have available. This machine will be a four wheel machine with the front (contact) wheel being driven by a 1/2 HP single phase motor. At the back will be a crowned jockey wheel, and belt tension will be provided by a sprung swinging arm with wheel. Belt tracking will be via a pivoting jockey wheel using the system described in Wayne Goddard's book "$50 knife shop".

Linisher base

Shown in this photo are a 900 mm high grinder stand and a 1 m length of 180 mm x 75 mm channel on which I will build the machine.

Front spindle

I have bolted a spindle with 3/4" shaft to the front of the channel. The contact wheel will be on the right, and a pulley which will be attached to the left of the shaft will be driven by the electric motor.

Tension wheel

This photo shows the tensioner wheel on its swinging arm with spring. The arm is fixed to a vertical stringer which runs from the channel down to the baseplate.

Tracking wheel

A front view of the tracking wheel assembly. The arm with the wheel moves in the vertical axis to adjust belt tracking.

Linisher front view

A front view of the machine showing the motor suspended beneath the contact wheel.

Linisher side view

A side view of the completed machine.
