Zedteq Hunting Knives

Darren Englebretsen, New Zealand

Design and construction

  • Blade design

My aim is to offer practical but uncommon knives, not generally made by the major knife companies, as well as more common blade designs. Thus, for example, you will see that I offer banana hunter and raised drop point models and a compact skinner as well as standard drop point hunting knives and Green River-style skinning knives.

Pig hunting knives have been designed after talking to local enthusiasts about their needs and wants, while survival knives are relatively unique designs. In all cases I try to keep the blade designs as simple as is consistent with good function.

I am also able to make double edged blades, as shown for example in my projects page. Such knives are custom / special order items, please email for more information.

  • Handles

All of my handles are designed in a fairly conservative style. The sides of the handles are flat, to help prevent the knife slipping in the hand while working inside body cavities etc.. The handles of my full tang knives are designed to be very comfortable when used either normally or upside down.

  • Guards

My knives are designed with guards to help prevent the hand slipping forward onto the blade in use. All of the knives shown on this website can be made with a brass guard, please enquire.

  • Construction

Zedteq knives are made using an inletted half tang. A half tang, running the full length of the handle, is fitted to a single piece of wood precisely inletted along the top to receive it. The tang is held in place by two pins as well as with high strength epoxy adhesive. I chose the half tang construction method mainly for reasons of weight as, compared to similar full tang knives, the half tang knives are noticeably lighter.
